11" x 14" Prismacolor Painting

I think this elf is both soft and warm and yet somewhat dangerous at the same time. Maybe she has some kind of power that we don’t know about

Sometimes it’s really fun to play around with fantasy. As with most of my drawings I had no idea what this was going to look like until it was finished. I really like how it came out.

The Soldiers Father

At the time that I drew this one I was thinking a great deal about the war and the effects that wars always have on people. I often contemplated the ethics of war and the sometimes necessity of conflict and what this necessity says about us as a human race.

I truly believe that most people really are good. They live and they love and they do the best that they can to follow that which they believe to be true. However, war is not caused by most people. It is caused by wicked individuals who will do anything to achieve power and get what they want. So where does that leave the rest of us? Do we stand by and allow these individuals to destroy our freedom and other’s freedom or do we fight back?

This painting is of the Father of one who has decided to fight back. His son or daughter has gone to war and he is left at home. He is powerless to protect his child from the atrocities that he knows they will face and so all that is left to him is to do that which all parents must somehow do, let go.

My brother and I once made up a fantasy land called Neziaroh. I decided to play around with that and draw one of the characters that live in this land.

A painting of a smiling man, yellows and blues -titled Life is Good

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Life isn’t always perfect. We get out of bed each day and stuff happens. We get our feelings hurt, we trip over loose objects and bang our shins, we lose jobs, we lose friends. I believe however that happiness is a choice. We can decide to be happy no matter what. We can teach ourselves to allow life’s trials to make us stronger rather than angrier. We can literally train our minds to be at peace with the world no matter how hard things get.

I named this painting Life is Good because I truly believe that it is. It’s not easy, it’s not always fun, it’s not always what we had planned, but it is good.

a video presentation of the artwork of Maria Hathaway

My brother, Chas put this video together as a way of showcasing my artwork. I think he did a great job. I hope you’ll take a moment to watch it. Don’t worry, it’s not too long.
